* In the United States Navy, a senior chief petty officer is enlisted pay grade No. 8 , or E-8. In the United States Army , where I served, we commonly referred to each other by our pay grades. The Navy has many traditions and much lore, and apparently, they never refer to each other by their pay grades alone. In all branches, the grade of E-7 is a major milestone. In the Navy, E-7 is a chief petty officer, a title of deity . The senior chief is E-8 and the master chief is E-9, and E-9 is the top enlisted pay grade in the United States military.

Byers said he has no plans to write a memoir or seek a movie deal. And he doesn’t want to publicly discuss any other missions in which he has participated, seeking to maintain the privacy of his community above all.

“The deed is all, not the glory,” he said.

I like this guy.

He’s not an E-8, he’s a Senior Chief.

As a retired Navy Chief, I take offense to you calling him an E-8.

Nobody can offend you without your permission, Chief, and if you seek offense where none was intended, then that’s energy wasted. I go to church with a retired senior chief petty officer. I call him “Senior” every time I see him and he was an E8 and if I have made a mistake, then bad on me, but I do not believe I have. This guy is badass and my only intent was to pay him respect.

@Nuke-guy, please see my edit above, which edit, or comment, given the neighborly excellence of the Oppositelock community, would well have been yours to offer. You missed an opportunity to school us and I had to put the pieces together myself.

Happy Sunday, Chief!

Hind sight being what it is, I came off a bit wrong. This is something that was drilled into me and reinforced with many pushups through my career. My reaction was accordingly to my training.

My apologies to you and the staff for coming off wrong.

It’s good. What was your specialty? I’ve got TONs of respect for the Navy, by the way.
